Dred Scott went to court for freedom after his owner died and he sued his wife in 1857 it was known as the Dred Scott v. Sandford and was denied his wishes to be free although he and his wife were enslaved on land the slavery was illegal. The Supreme Court voted 7-2 against Scott.
The abolitionist movement: John Brown
The abolitionist movement is when the north was against the south to get rid of slavery some important people were John Brown and Dred Scott. His attempt in 1859 to start a liberation movement among enslaved African Americans in Harpers Ferry, Virginia sparked the sight of hope in the country
The Election of Lincoln
The Election of 1860 was the 19th quadrennial (every four years) that led to immediate outbreak of the south because they wanted John C. Breckinridge because he was for slavery. The South eventually seceded from the union in 1861 on the day that president Lincoln was inaugurated into office. 11 states seceded from the union they are: South Carolina Mississippi Florida Alabama Georgia Louisiana Texas Virginia Arkansas North Carolina and Tennessee.
